If a capsule wardrobe didn’t work for you, what did?

I think that like many people, I’m unhappy with my wardrobe. It feels like I have too much and too little to wear at the same time. When I look into my wardrobe, I see a few trusted favorites, a lot of so-so items (many of which are way too similar to each other), and way too many items I never or rarely wear.

I tried to build a capsule wardrobe but realised that I love variety too much, and having to do laundry all the time was tiring lol.

My goal is similar to a capsule wardrobe: I want to have a wardrobe of items I love, that are good quality and get worn regularly. I want to be more mindful when shopping and learn what works for me.

If you have been in the same situation, what has ultimately worked for you? Are there any style systems/tips/resources that helped you?
