Traveling from Houayxay to Thakhek Laos

Hi people of reddit,

I am planning a trip to Laos in december. I am looking to get from Houayxay to Thakhek in the easiest way possible. Any tips and suggestions are welcome. I would prefer avoiding border crossing unless this is really the easiest way to go about this. Thank you in advance.
