nail/finger tip advice

i pick at the skin around my nails a lot, and in here a lot of you guys said it looked like cuticle clippers would help me out. i got them last night and the images are what they look like after using them for the first time. does anyone have any advice on using them?

also, i get hard dead skin in the corners by the top of my nail, should i be clipping those?
