The U.S Navy’s program to build its newest class of ballistic missile submarines is nearing a key milestone in 2028 with the expected delivery of the USS District of Columbia or SBN-826.

The 20,810-ton nuclear-powered submarine is around 70% complete and will replace the old Ohio-class of submarines, which are responsible for the country’s nuclear deterrence.

Although delivery was planned before 2028, complications during the construction phase led to a revised date.

There were also issues with the timely supply of crucial parts and delays in assembling major sections of the vessel.

However, the situation is improving as shipbuilders reported improved coordination with suppliers.

The remaining parts are being delivered on time, and assembly work is moving forward consistently, per reports.

The first submarine of the new class, the District of Columbia (SSBN-826), is currently being assembled at GD Electric Boat.

Once the new class of submarines enter active service, the U.S. will be able to undertake a wider range of missions amidst changing geopolitical conditions.

Given its importance, the project has been given top priority within the naval modernisation efforts, and funding was also provided to ensure it moved forward without any interruptions.

The United States is trying to maintain a consistent production schedule to avoid delays and keep costs under control.

The Navy has planned everything and hopes that if everything keeps running smoothly and no technological, logistical or other issues are encountered, the first submarine of the class could commence operational patrols around the end of the decade, in sync with the retirement of the old submarines.

The Navy needs to maintain the schedule to avoid gaps in coverage. The long-term goal is to create a fleet to support national defence requirements.

Work is currently ongoing not only on the lead vessel but also on the others in the series, which are in different stages of construction.

The Fiscal Year 2027 budget includes $15 billion allocation for the Columbia-class that includes the last portion of funding for the third Columbia boat, Groton (SSBN-828), and full-funding for the fourth unnamed boat, SSBN-829.
