How to dye blonde hair brunette without going green??

I have naturally blonde hair and am wanting to go brunette to dark brown I was thinking a semi permanent and hair mask to start off so it isn’t too drastic but I have heard heaps of people saying you need to counter with a red so it doesn’t go green?? I don’t want red hair at all does anyone know the correct portions or if I should use red? I don’t want to pay a million dollars to get it done professionally but I can see anything online!!
