As a silk enthusiast and artisan, I'm tired of seeing the market flooded with plastic products. I’ve noticed many people don’t know how to tell. So I want to share this simple way.

Real silk chars slowly, self-extinguishes the moment the flame is removed, and leaves a crushable black ash. The smell is distinctive: burning hair, or a faint singed protein note. Synthetic fibers behave differently — polyester melts, beads, and smells chemical; rayon burns fast and leaves no ash.

Three supporting checks:

1. Feel. Rub the fabric briskly between your palms. Real silk warms up from friction. Synthetics stay cool.

2. Look. Silk's luster shifts as the angle changes — soft, multi-directional, never harsh. A flat, uniform shine usually means polyester.

3. Price & hand. Genuine silk drapes with quiet weight. If it feels slippery-light and the price seems too low, it almost certainly is.

No single test is foolproof, but the burn test combined with touch gives you a reliable read in under a minute.
