I've never been anywhere in Asia. Is Bangkok a good place to start?

I'm very interested in seeing parts of Asia for myself, but I'm cautious about taking on more than I can handle. Specifically Thailand seems a little intimidating but I'd love to visit. And since I've found a direct flight connection from home to Bangkok I'm thinking about planning a trip.

I've travelled a lot in Europe and North America, and once to Australia. The "closest" I've been to Southeast Asia is probably Hawai'i, which I adore. I can handle heat and humidity having lived in Texas, and I've navigated unfamiliar linguistic landscapes before.

Things I seek out when travelling: museums, historical/cultural sites, natural beauty, local food.

I know Bangkok is famous for its nightlife but that doesn't interest me. I also don't eat seafood, which I believe is ubiquitous in SE Asia generally.

Can anyone offer any advice on whether Bangkok is a good place to visit for a first-timer in Asia? Thanks in advance!
