Travel advice!

Hey everyone, I'm looking for some travel advice. I'm planning a vacation to Crete with my parents. It's not my first rodeo planning a vacation abroad however it is the first time that we are looking for a week long holiday.

We'd like to go somewhere in august, to Crete for a week or about 7 nights. Im looking for any advice! Hotels and activities, car rentals tips. My mother prefers calmer more relaxing beach days while i prefer visiting historical, mithological and archeological sites and learning about the place im visiting.

I'm thankful for any help or tip or reccomendation. For hotels we're not looking for any luxury place, a clean hotel with nice view and continental breakfast is ideal.
