NYC Hotel Recommendations

My husband and I are going to NYC for the first time in early October. We are going to see a concert at MSG, but are going to make a trip out of it and stay for around 5 days. I would like to find an affordable (for NYC) hotel that is walkable to tourist spots and MSG. I also want to be in a safe area. I have been looking at Arlo Midtown or The New Yorker Hotel. Any thoughts/recommendations would be helpful!
