Munich - Neuschwanstein Castle

Hi everyone, I am traveling to Munich in early January next year to visit Neuschwanstein Castle, and it will be my first time in Germany. I am debating between renting a car and taking a bus from Munich Central Bus Station to Schwangau. Obviously, renting a car will be more expensive, but it would also be faster and more convenient since we could stop whenever we want to take photos.

I was wondering how easy it is to get around Munich and the Schwangau area without a car, especially since my main purpose for the trip is photography. I would love to be able to reach some good photo spots, particularly higher viewpoints like the image attached below.

If you have rented a car and driven from Munich to Schwangau before, I would love to hear your thoughts or advice. Are there any places worth stopping at along the drive?

I am also looking for any advice or input about visiting the castle itself if you have been there before. I have seen quite a few mixed opinions about the experience.

Thanks so much!
