Seoul has urged Iran to clarify its stance on the recent attack involving a ship operated by a South Korean shipping firm in the Strait of Hormuz.

The incident was discussed during a telephone conversation between South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi.

Cho told Aragachi that South Korea is investigating the attack on the Panama-flagged cargo ship HMM Namu, operated by HMM Co, and asked Iran to provide details of the incident.

Cho also emphasised the need to ensure safety and freedom of navigation for all vessels passing through the region.

Aragachi responded by agreeing that there is a need to restore safe passage in the waterway while calling for an end to the standoff.

The two countries agreed to remain in communication to ensure the safety of South Korean Ships passing through the strait and the country’s seafarers still stuck in the Hormuz.

A government investigation team revealed that the ship was struck by two flying objects, resulting in an explosion and fire on the HMM Namu.

The South Korean Government said that it is working to find out who was behind the attack.
