Alternative to Hairspray for Wedding Style

My daughter wants me to do her hair in a messy half-up/half-down for her wedding. It will, of course, need staying power for the whole, long day. She doesn't want me to use hairspray, though, because her experience with her hair is that it not only doesn't work, but makes her curls fall faster (she's tried many brands). So I need help -- what products can I use to keep her hair picture perfect all day (especially alternative sprays, since spritzing as I go is the only technique I know for this), and are their any particular methods or videos you'd recommend?
