How long does it take you to use up your mascara?

I'm asking this because a mascara should be used within six months of opening and I never manage to do that. Granted, I don't wear it every day but I know that most people who do have more than one mascara, so I was wondering how long does a mascara last you and would you keep using it past expiration date.
