Opinions on New Caledonia

Myself 20m and my Partner 23f Recently travelled to New Caledonia over 7 days as i have always been bewildered by the crazy fauna and flora on the island and it's close proximity to Brisbane Australia making it easy for us. I'm making this post mainly to give people an idea of the conditions in NC and if it's worth travelling there as very little is available online in English about the islands relative to other holiday destinations.

First thing i would like to bring up is that it is definitely not going to be squeaky clean everywhere you go and the aftermath of the 2024 riots are still clearly visible with random buildings around Noumea being burnt down still even in early 2026. However the touristy areas of Noumea at Anse Vata and Baie Des Citrons are still very nice for relaxing and general touristy things. In saying that i would not go to New Caledonia as it is now for just a relaxing lazy time around the city as it is limiting you from what is actually incredible about the territory.

If you are going to New Caledonia, i would certainly recommend doing what we did, hire a car for the time you are there and choose routes to travel on for each day so you can properly explore the island of Grand Terre, we stayed in Noumea the whole time we were there but in the week we racked up close to 2000km's and even did a day trip over to isle of pines on the Betico 2 ferry. On these road trips, or any trip outside the city or main route on the south west side of the island, ensure you are bringing some food and water and a decent amount of fuel as google maps will very commonly mistakenly have shops and fuel stations listed as still operating or open and they will either be long gone or only open for an hour a day it seems. Along with this please do some good research on the roads you are taking before you go as even though google maps might have a road listed as a main route, it might actually be a 4wd track haha, this is something i did wrong and ended up in a Chinese hatchback on the RP10 route ramming logs under my tire to get ground clearance to hopefully make it out. It will be an adventure that neither me or my partner will ever forget but please DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Something that we were told is that in some areas of NC (specifically Canala and Thio) we would run into some racial problems as from what i understand those two towns are very Kanaki (local people) aligned and were the center of a situation in the 80's. However in our time going through these towns and speaking with the locals, we never felt unsafe and always had people waving and smiling to us, maybe it would be different if we were French but not once did we as Australian white people ever feel unsafe, at least not from the people and maybe from the infrastructure in those areas but it's all apart of the adventure. In our entire time in the territory did we run into any unsavory characters other than maybe one or two sketchy looking people in Noumea's city center, which is any city. The people of NC honestly love tourists, which is definitely not the same as my country Australia haha.

The islands natural wonders are honestly awe inspiring, being Australian we live in a country with it's own assortment of incredible landscapes but NC was just something else. So many Endemic species of Fauna and Flora makes stepping onto the islands feel like a different world to anything else you can experience. No one area of the island is ever the same as each other with every 40km feeling entirely different.

In conclusion from this non cohesive ramble about NC, Grande Terre and her surrounding islands will be somewhere i will be wanting to go back to in the future. As it stands at the moment, New Caledonia is for the adventurers and not just relaxing, if you are looking for a destination where you will be treated like a king for the time you are there and fed on a golden platter, this is not the destination for you. If you want to have a real authentic feeling vacation experience, this is the destination.

Obviously everything is subjective though so draw your own conclusions, i will be writing below the routes i took on 2 days if you wish to do something similar.

First day route:

  1. Leave Noumea for Fort Teremba - A very cool colonial fort with some deep history

  2. From Fort Teremba go to cascade bameciara - follow google maps mark to the point in the road it stops as there is a awesome lookout of the waterfall where the mark stops on the road that is not listed on google maps

  3. my next destination was going to be CIU waterfalls but we could not find the entrance to the area might be best to skip CIU waterfalls

  4. Head for belvedere du bota mere - Absolutely incredible view in the middle of a valley leading to the see one a small steep hill top with a Christian cross facing out to the ocean - the rp10 route that connects you to this area from the previous destinations however becomes dirt on the edge of a cliff with various washouts and a bit of ground clearance will be needed with simple 4wd knowledge, once you get to thio it is good road the whole way home

  5. From belvedere du bota mere you can stop by the Japanese cemetery to see some of the Japanese culture on the island

  6. Home back to Noumea from here

On this route you will spend probably around 10 hours if you visit all destinations

Second day route:

  1. Leave from Noumea for the Blue River Provincial Park - Amazing roads leading here, there was a small fee at the entrance to the park, something like 700xpf per person. In the Blue River Provincial Park we went to the Houp Géant, there is a road that leads most of the way to it and is accessible by any car, the track leading up the hill is not marked on google maps but is visible on imagery.

  2. Leave from Blue River Provincial Park to the Japanese iron mine on the eastern side of the island - incredible destination, especially considering it was constructed in the 30's before WW2. Keep in mind that the roads from Yate south along the coast start getting a bit meh

  3. From the Japanese Iron Mine go to L'oasis or La Madeleine Waterfalls or both - Both are incredibly cool destinations, the waterfall is much easier to access with a road car. Please be ready for very rough roads that are more pothole than road from the iron mine to Prony Energies, this route will take you straight past one of the prominent refining and mining operations on the island and is quite awe inspiring and sad to see.

  4. From the waterfalls go north back up to the Blue river and take the same road you came in on back to Noumea as it is very well upkept and smooth.

The entire route on this day trip is paved, but there are still some very rough areas that will take some concentration to navigate, a normal car will do fine on this trip.

If anyone has any questions on anything i will try to respond cheers.
