How did you guys start out

So lately I’ve been seeing so many videos of such beautiful lakes/mountains/water falls/etc. so I’m 20 and have a good amount of money plus just landed an even better paying job. And I so want to go visit places like what I see with my girlfriend. But how do you guys find places/routes to go? And as well what all should I think about buying for trips? Obviously back packs a tent and boots/shoes? But that’s all broad. Any advice/help will be great appreciated. Also I live in central Illinois so no matter what it’s gunna be traveling and definitely interested in out of country
