Best alpine village in Austria in late August?
Me and a friend (both early 30s) are planning a few days in the austrian alps at the end of august. we're coming from munich by car and flying home from salzburg
we're looking for a small traditional alpine village - green meadows, cows, dramatic peaks, mountain huts where you can eat cheese and drink schnapps after a hike. basically the classic austrian alps experience but somewhere that isn't overrun with tourists
we've been looking at places like Dienten am Hochkönig, Gschnitztal, Filzmoos and a few others but honestly it's hard to tell from the internet what's actually the most beautiful in person
what we care about:
- being up in the mountains, not in a valley town
- amazing hiking with mountain huts
- green meadows with cows everywhere
- dramatic peaks, not just soft green hills
- quiet and authentic, not a ski resort in summer mode
- ideally somewhere with a nice lake we can swim in nearby
we don't need nightlife or a big town. we've been to wengen in switzerland and loved the vibes there — looking for something similar in austria
has anyone actually stayed in any of these places in summer? what would you recommend? open to suggestions we haven't thought of too
thanks!
