What is the best way to fake tan?

I’ve decided to purchase some fake tan as no matter how hard I try, I just do not tan in the sun I only go red or stay pale and I’m really fed up of being told how pale I look. I’m not looking to achieve a really dark tan just a nice glow!

Those of you who fake tan, what is your routine in terms of exfoliating, shaving ect?
