Heat Styling with Cool Blonde Highlights - How Bad?

I recently heard that using heat on cool toned highlights turns them to brass almost right away. Do you find this to be true? How do you make your cool cool blondes stay that way as long as possible? If you depend on a purple shampoo, how often and which one? I like my highlights to be as close to platinum as possible.
