How do you preserve collectible jewelry?

I've begun to take more care in how I store and clean collectible jewelry when I saw that a few of the older pieces were a bit dull because they had been put together in a drawer. The items are nothing too expensive; But, a few pieces have sentimental value, so I thought it would be a good idea to know better how to keep them. The thing that helped me was to keep the items separate instead of piling them one on top of the other, that is, in some chains and softer metals that easily get scratched. Also, from exposure to humidity, I changed to using soft cloth pouches and smaller storage boxes.
