Is it typical to be charged for a model shoot?

A couple of weeks ago I was scrolling along and I came across a photographer who was looking for people to help her out with her mood board vision and said there was a model call so I reached out and there was one mood board left. We discussed a little, but more just to say I liked the style she was going for and where/when worked for her. She chose the date and the place, but I received an invoice for $270 and a contract with a lot of common clauses for a couples shoot, she said it was the right one.
Is it common for photographers to charge for model shoots? It seems odd to me but I wanted an opinion because I’ve never dealt with a photographer before
