Can someone explain self tanner options to me like I’m 5?

This is a new thing for me and I don’t want to spend a bunch of money on things I’m not going to like or use. I’ve never done this before. I’m not very high maintenance at all. I wear makeup most days, but rarely do much with my hair. I just really want a good base where I’m the same color somewhat everywhere..
