The Story Behind a Material Matters More Than Most People Realize

The Story Behind a Material Matters More Than Most People Realize

One thing I've learned from building MaLeeMa is that sustainability starts long before a product is made. It starts with the material.

Our banana fibre comes from stems that are usually discarded after harvest. Our bamboo fabrics are made from natural fibres, with only a small amount of stretch added where needed. Our cork materials are repurposed from used cork waste. Even the recycled plastic we use began as material headed for landfill. What interests me isn't just the final product. It's the journey before it becomes one.

Where did the material come from?
Who worked with it?
What would have happened to it otherwise?

Every material has a story. Every product carries the choices made before it reached a customer. I think consumers are becoming more curious about those stories, and honestly, that's a good thing. People shouldn't have to guess whether a product is genuinely better for the planet. Brands should be able to explain it clearly.
