Iran said that it will impose a service fees for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

The announcement was made by Iran’s Ambassador to China, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, during the World Peace Forum in Beijing.

“As a country where the Hormuz is part of its territorial waters, we will definitely charge service fees,” he said.

Fazli added that Iran is working with Oman to manage traffic through one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, which handles 20% of global oil and gas shipments.

The news comes after U.S and Iran signed an interim peace agreement under which ships could use Hormuz without paying any fee for 60 days after the ceasefire.

It is unclear when this new service fee will come into effect as Iran continued to push for greater control of the strategic waterway.

Fazli also said that Iran is charging a fee for the services it would provide to ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz adding that it should be seen as a transit toll.

Through these charges, Iran would ensure security of navigation and monitor ship movements in the Strait and also address the environmental impact caused by the massive volume of maritime traffic.

Fazli added that Iran would definitely offer favourable terms to nations that supported it during the conflict.

“We will definitely consider special treatment for the countries that were friendly to us and specially stood by us during the hard times,” he said.

He did not mention or name the countries that could receive special treatment or explain how the policy would be implemented.

However, Iran’s announcement points to the fact that it is planning to establish a long-term framework for controlling and managing the Strait of Hormuz.
