Indian Government said that ships loaded with fertilisers, urea, di-ammonium phosphate, sulphur and other raw materials crossed the Strait of Hormuz after it reopened on June 17, 2026.

The announcement has brought relief to farmers concerned over the availability of fertilisers in the ongoing kharif sowing season.

Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister JP Nadda said that this was possible only due to the government’s planning, import diversification and coordination with Indian Missions abroad.

India purchased urea from several nations like Malaysia, Oman, Russia, Egypt, Algeria, Nigeria, and Vietnam.

DAP and NPK fertilisers were bought from suppliers in Morocco, Saudi Arabia, the U.S, Jordan and Russia.

The government has secured 19.76 million tonnes (mt) of fertilisers, equivalent to more than 51% of the season’s estimated demand, to ensure uninterrupted supply.

In 2025, the stock with the ministry at this time was just 33% of the total demand.

The Ministry also announced that the supply of natural gas, which had fallen to 6% during the U.S-Iran war, has been restored completely, and all the urea plants are now operating at their maximum capacity.

India produced 7.2 mt of urea in April and June, exceeding the target of 6.8 mt, while DAP production reached 984,000 tonnes, more than the set target of 861,000 tonnes.

The government has assured that reserves of fertilisers, including urea, DAP, muriate of potash (MOP), NPK and single super phosphate, stand at 16.3 mt as of July 2.

Five more ships laden with fertilisers will cross the Strait of Hormuz for Indian ports in the coming days, the government has said.
