Iranian Foreign Minister Arrives In Oman To Discuss Service Fees For Hormuz Amid Western Backlash

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi reached Muscat, the capital of Oman, to discuss bilateral ties and regional issues.
Before the visit, Spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry Esmaeli Baqaei said that the foreign ministers of Iran and Oman would discuss establishing mechanisms for the safe transit of ships via Hormuz in accordance with Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
Baqaei also added that the visit follows consultations that Iran and Oman initiated two months ago regarding Hormuz.
In the middle of June, the U.S and Iran reached an MOU, brokered by Pakistan, to end the war and the attacks on ships in the Gulf.
However, both sides exchanged attacks over the last two days amid an escalation following Iranian attacks on 3 commercial ships in the critical waterway.
After this incident, Trump declared the deal with Iran is over and fired on over 80 Iranian sites, and Iran then attacked U.S military sites in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Jordon.
According to the MOU, it is Iran’s responsibility to establish normal arrangements and provide maritime services to ships passing through the strategic waterway in coordination with Oman, and the Islamic Republic has been fulfilling those obligations.
The two countries had agreed to consult closely on the matter.
Many rounds of negotiations were held in Tehran and Muscat, he said, adding that Araqchi’s visit is aimed at continuing those consultations and facilitating the safe passage of ships through Hormuz.
