Can you really hold a chicken like that?

I saw this scene on YouTube, it's from a movie called "Napoleon Dynamite" (2004). Can chickens really be held in the way the main character is holding them at 0:45? It looks like a person could accidentally break the legs of the chicken if you hold them like that.
