LPG Tanker Disha Carrying 28 Indian Crew Attacked In Iranian Waters

A Mozambique-flagged liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker carrying 28 Indian crew members came under attack in Iranian territorial waters on Friday.

India’s Embassy in Tehran said the vessel, DISHA, was attacked earlier in the day and confirmed that all Indian crew members were safe.

According to a statement posted by India’s Embassy in Tehran on X, the Mozambique-flagged LPG tanker DISHA came under attack in Iranian territorial waters earlier on Friday.

It said the vessel has 28 Indian nationals on board and that the embassy has remained in close contact with the relevant authorities. Authorities have not said who was behind the attack or whether the tanker suffered any damage.

Tensions between the United States and Iran have raised concerns over the safety of commercial shipping in the Gulf.

The Forward Seamen’s Union of India, which represents Indian maritime workers, said the tanker was hit by an unknown missile near the Strait of Hormuz while sailing toward the Persian Gulf.

The Strait of Hormuz, between Iran and Oman, is one of the world’s most important shipping routes. Before the latest escalation in regional tensions, about one-fifth of global energy supplies passed through the waterway, making it a key route for oil and LPG shipments.

The attack follows other recent incidents involving commercial vessels in conflict-affected waters.

Separately, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said a commercial vessel, MV OMORFI, was attacked while transiting the Black Sea, reportedly in Russian territorial waters.

One Indian national was killed in the attack, while two others were reported safe. The ministry condemned the attack on the commercial ship and said India’s mission in Russia had contacted the relevant authorities.

India’s Directorate General of Shipping has also advised Indian-flagged vessels and foreign-flagged ships to exercise the “highest degree of caution” while sailing in and around waters off Yemen, the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait and the southern Red Sea.

India has repeatedly called for the protection of civilian shipping. On Thursday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said, “Under no circumstances can attacks on seafarers, civilian shipping or infrastructure be countenanced.”

The attack comes ahead of a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Tuesday.

Netanyahu’s office said he will travel to Washington on Monday at Trump’s invitation and will also attend the funeral service for the late Senator Lindsey Graham.

The planned meeting follows reports that Trump is considering whether to resume large-scale military operations against Iran, potentially through a joint campaign with Israel similar to Operation Epic Fury, which was launched on Feb. 28.

The Indian Embassy said it remains in touch with the relevant authorities and will continue to monitor the situation. No further details have been released on the condition of the vessel or the circumstances surrounding the attack.
