Iran Says Ukrainian Strike On Its Ship In Caspian Sea ‘Cannot Go Unanswered’

Iran said that the Ukrainian attack on one of its ships in the Caspian Sea “cannot go unanswered,” further complicating the strained diplomatic relations among Ukraine, Russia, the United States and the West.

The cargo ship was carrying steel from Russia’s Astrakhan Port to Iran’s Anzali Port when it came under attack from Ukrainian forces.

The blast on the ship killed a seafarer and wounded three, while damaging the bridge completely, leaving the vessel stranded.

Abbas Araghchi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran, criticised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a strongly worded post on X.

He accused him of “a blatant violation of the UN Charter” with the strike carried out “at Israel’s behest to drag Europe into its war”.

Iranian foreign ministry also summoned Ukraine’s charge d’affaires in Tehran and lodged a formal protest, condemning the attack as a “hostile and criminal” act.

Araghchi also communicated with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in a call in which both criticised Ukraine’s ‘illegal action’ and “dangerous adventurism.”

Lavrov said it was a violation of international law which threatened maritime navigation in critical trade routes connecting Russia and Iran.

The two also held discussions regarding the worsening geopolitical situation in West Asia and developments around the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran blamed Iran for the ongoing situation in the region.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that they had hit a Russian warship and also other vessels transporting Iran-linked military cargo.

Baghaei said that Iran’s priority is to protect its territorial integrity, sovereignty, and national security amidst the ongoing aggression against the Islamic Republic.

The statement comes as uncertainty looms over the future of the MOU signed on June 18, 2026, according to which the U.S and Iran were to negotiate and reach a final agreement within 60 days to achieve lasting peace and permanently end the war in the Gulf.

However, renewed military action cast doubts over those diplomatic efforts.

U.S President Donald Trump recently stated that Iran is interested in negotiations, but it cannot be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon.

“They are talking to us right now. They’d love to make a deal,” Trump said, adding that while he was willing to listen, he did not believe Iran was yet prepared to reach an agreement.
