I Tried the 8 Best Under-Eye Patches for Brighter, Less Puffy Eyes

I Tried the 8 Best Under-Eye Patches for Brighter, Less Puffy Eyes

I don’t know if it’s been the change in seasons or if I feel like I’ve been looking more tired than usual, but I have been flying through the under-eye patches in my skincare collection. Every day (and sometimes even twice a day), I peruse my options, pick a patch that addresses my skin concerns for the day, and pop it on while I work, do chores, or relax in my room. Whether I want to brighten, depuff, or lift, there’s an under-eye mask option for practically anything.

Of course, like any other cosmetic product, not all eye patches are created equal, and I’ve actually thrown away entire product lines because they simply weren't up to par with what I was looking for or expecting. But what exactly should you be on the hunt for in your under-eye patches of choice? “Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, caffeine, and niacinamide,” Hadley King, MD, previously told Marie Claire. “Emollients like jojoba and argan oils and ceramides [also] help to support the skin barrier, and occlusives help to lock in moisture.”

Of course, I’ve been testing away for the past few weeks so I’ve built up quite a fabulous (if I do say so myself) roster of recommendations for anyone on the prowl for the best under-eye patches that money can buy. From luxury favorites that I highly recommend splurging on to drugstore beauty staples and even a few K-beauty formulas that I love, keep reading to get your skincare routine in tip-top shape ahead of the fall season.

When Is the Best Time to Use Under-Eye Patches?

While the type of under-eye patch you use is entirely up to you and your skin goals, using them at the right stage in your routine is essential. “Under-eye patches work best on clean skin, before moisturizer,” Mona Gohara, MD, tells me. “Think of them as a quick hydration boost that helps ingredients like hyaluronic acid and caffeine sink in.”

Pro tip: Dr. Gohara recommends using eye patches after traveling or eating certain foods, as well. “I love them after a long flight or after a salty dinner,” she says. “They're a quick reset button when your eyes need to look as refreshed as you feel.”

Is There a Correct Way to Apply Under-Eye Patches?

The answer to this question is a little nuanced, but long story short? Yes, there is a correct way to use under-eye patches. “Place the patch where your biggest concern is,” Dr. Gohara says. “If puffiness is the issue, position the wider end toward the inner corner of the eye where swelling tends to collect. If you're targeting crow's feet, flip the wider end toward the outer corner to give those fine lines a little more love.” Either way, she says to make sure the patch sits just below the lash line and not too close to the eye itself. Keeping your vision intact is the most important part of this entire process.
