The 10 Best Summer Hair Repair Products for Sun, Salt and Chlorine Damage

There’s very little I don’t love about summer: sun-soaked beach days, lazy afternoons by the pool, scenic boat rides. My color-treated, naturally fine hair, however, isn’t quite as big a fan. By the time August rolls around, all that saltwater, chlorine, heat, and sunshine has usually left my strands completely fried—and in desperate need of some end-of-summer hair repair. In fact, as celebrity hairstylist Mitchell Ramazon puts it, “Summer can be a perfect storm for hair damage.”

As it turns out, “chlorine and salt can strip away moisture, while repeated UV exposure weakens the hair’s protein structure and roughens the cuticle,” he adds. And it’s not just what you expose your hair to: “Pulling wet hair into a tight bun or brushing it aggressively after swimming can also create additional tension and breakage.” The telltale signs of damaged hair usually include dullness, dryness, frizz, tangling, and split ends. But, Ramazon says, “your color may also fade or look less vibrant, and your hair might feel brittle and suddenly become harder to style.”

Luckily, you don’t need to make an emergency appointment at your nearest salon to undo this summer’s damage. I’ve rounded up the 10 hair repair products my stressed-out strands swear by, along with the formulas beauty pros reach for—so you can restore your hair’s moisture, strength, and shine just in time for Labor Day.

How Does UV Damage Hair?

“UV exposure creates a form of hair ‘photoaging’,” explains Ramazon. “It can break down proteins and lipids within the hair, weaken the cuticle, and oxidize melanin, which is why natural and color-treated hair can become lighter, warmer, or faded after a lot of time in the sun.” Sadly, he says, “once the cuticle becomes rough or lifted, the hair has a harder time retaining moisture and becomes more vulnerable to frizz, tangling, and breakage.”

Diaz adds that “most people think about protecting their skin from UV rays, but the sun affects hair in many of the same ways.” According to the stylist, “prolonged UV exposure gradually breaks down the proteins that give hair its strength while also oxidizing both natural pigment and artificial hair color.” Meanwhile, “as the cuticle becomes damaged, moisture escapes more easily, leaving hair drier, duller, and increasingly vulnerable to breakage.”

What Ingredients Should I Look for to Repair Damaged Hair?

According to Ramazon, “damaged hair needs both internal strengthening and surface-level conditioning.” That’s why he looks for formulas containing “amino acids, hydrolyzed proteins, keratin-inspired technology, bond-building ingredients, glycerin, panthenol, silicones, and lipids that work together to strengthen weakened areas of the hair, restore moisture, and deliver shine.

Similarly, Diaz recommends looking for products that focus on restoring moisture, strengthening the hair fiber, and reinforcing the cuticle. He claims that healthy hair isn’t the result of one miracle ingredient, but rather about “consistently replenishing what summer has taken away.” That said, he still looks for ingredients like ceramides, botanical oils, and amino acids.
