U.S Navy’s Arleigh-Burke guided missile destroyer, USS Benfold, suffered from an engineering casualty involving its generators while conducting routine operations in the South China Sea.

The incident, which occurred on July 24, 2026, left the ship without working toilets, air conditioning, galley services and even potable water for 4 days.

There was a power outage on the warship, which affected essential services on the 10,000-ton warship along with its ability to manoeuvre independently.

The reason for the failure remains unknown, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause.

During the 4 days, the crew of the guided missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls provided cooked meals and other warships from the USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group, based in Japan, also offered assistance, according to the 7th Fleet.

The incident occurred at a time when temperatures in the South China Sea rose to around 37 degrees Celsius, which made it very difficult for the sailors as the air conditioning system had stopped working.

The USS Benfold then went to Subic Bay in the Philippines for repairs, which were completed by August 8, 2026, and then the destroyer returned to duty.

This is the second incident this year in which a U.S Navy destroyer in the Indo-Pacific reported a power failure.

In May, the USS Higgins also reported power failure and loss of propulsion for many hours after what the Navy called an electrical system issue. The warship with 300 crew was unable to manoeuvre independently for hours.

The USS Benfold’s breakdown came amidst increasing scrutiny over the long deployments and strain placed on sailors as the war with Iran drags on.
