Carnival Cruise Ship Makes Emergency Manoeuvre In Mississippi River To Avoid Collision With Cargo Ship

A normal evening aboard the Carnival Valor took a terrifying turn on August 17 when the massive cruise ship was forced into an abrupt emergency manoeuvre while navigating the Mississippi River.

The cruise ship’s sharp turn to avoid collision with a broken-down cargo ship caused the vessel to list severely.

It also sent pool water into passenger dining areas and sparked widespread panic among the guests. The incident occurred on the last night of a 5-day round-trip from New Orleans.

According to early passenger accounts, the captain had to make an abrupt right turn after suddenly encountering a cargo ship that had lost power and was sitting in the ship’s path.

Footage circulating on social media showed a chaotic scene as rushing water from the ship’s upper-deck swimming pool flooded an indoor dining space.

Guests could be seen scrambling to grab their plates and personal belongings. “It felt like the ship was gonna tip over,” one passenger said.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one guest explained the severity of the tilt: “I have been on several cruises and been in rocky water. But this was different. We went from straight up to full list in about one second, making the force of movement greater. If it would’ve happened about 10 seconds later, I possibly could’ve been hit by one of the luggage carts. They didn’t roll; they slammed against the wall.”

What increased the panic was a lack of immediate communication from the ship’s crew. Several passengers noted that an announcement from the captain confirming that the situation was under control would have eased the anxiety of the terrified passengers.

Carnival Cruise Line released a statement acknowledging the event. “On August 17, Carnival Valor experienced a brief listing while transiting the Mississippi River,” the company stated, adding that while such movements can occasionally occur during normal navigation, the specific circumstances of this event were being reviewed.

Carnival confirmed that the crew responded immediately to the flooding. Fortunately, there were no major injuries, though medical assistance was provided to the guests who requested it.

On social media, many people compared the incident to history’s most famous maritime disaster, the ‘Titanic of the modern era, damn’, one commentator wrote, while some questioned how the ship’s sophisticated radar could have missed a massive cargo ship in its path until the very last second.

Despite the incident, the cruise ship resumed its normal operations and docked in New Orleans on schedule before leaving for its next 6-day itinerary in the Gulf of Mexico, towards Cozumel and Progreso.
