The trope has been around for centuries, from Shakespeare’s 17th-century stories of comrades-turned-lovers in plays like Much Ado About Nothing and Twelfth Night to Jane Austen writing about the evolution of Emma Woodhouse and George Knightley’s relationship in Emma circa 1815. And who could forget Louisa May Alcott’s description of Laurie’s less-than-successful attempt to take his friendship with Jo March to another level in Little Women?

Former ballerina Bree has always harbored a secret crush on her NFL player BFF Nathan—and after some tequila-induced oversharing with TMZ about it, the duo finally tries on a (definitely, totally pretend) romantic relationship for size to capitalize on all the publicity.
Forced Proximity Friends-to-Lovers Books
A very fun take on Twelfth Night, the final book in Nisha Sharma’s If Shakespeare Were an Auntie rom-com series combines friends-to-lovers with a marriage of convenience. After a whirlwind night, close friends Deepak and Vera wake up accidentally married. Soon, they realize that this new version of their relationship might help solve both their career issues…as long as the previously unrealized romantic love between them doesn’t get in the way.
In this very spicy entry from best-selling author Talia Hibbert, life-of-the-party Jasmine suddenly finds herself in need of a place to stay and knows just where to turn: her uptight best friend Rahul. That would be totally fine and dandy if it weren't for the fact that Rahul has been in love with Jasmine for years, and the forced proximity is making it very hard for him not to ruin the friendship.
Love Triangle Friends-to-Lovers Books
There are two friendships at the core of this 2024 novel’s central love triangle. Self-love expert Jo has long secretly pined for her best friend Ezra, but after meeting his new girlfriend, she decides it's finally time to move on. Enter: Malcolm, a shy writer who strikes up a genuine friendship with Jo before they finally act on the sparks between them—at which point, of course, Ezra suddenly starts to wonder what else could come of his connection with Jo.
Secret Pining Friends-to-Lovers Books
After watching her older sister Piper’s enemies-to-lovers storyline play out in It Happened One Summer, Hannah Bellinger gets her own shot at love in this follow-up. She strikes up a sweet but totally platonic relationship with fisherman Fox that includes relying on him for advice on her love life—even though he has secretly fallen very hard for her, much to the bewilderment of this avowed ladies’ man.
The inspiration for season 3 of Bridgerton, this fourth book in Julia Quinn’s hit Regency romance series charts the shifting relationship between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington. Pen has long had a crush on her best friend’s brother, and when Colin suddenly starts to see her through new eyes, too, there’s practically nobody in the ton who can keep them apart (besides, perhaps, one Lady Whistledown).
Second Chance Friends-to-Lovers Books
