A 14 MW Siemens Gamesa Turbine At Taiwan’s Orsted Offshore Wind Farm Catches Fire



A wind turbine at Orsted’s offshore wind farm in Taiwan stopped operating and then caught fire, according to reports. The incident was confirmed by Danish Developer Orsted, which issued a statement on the incident and provided all the details.
The Siemens Gamesa 14 MW offshore wind turbine stopped functioning after the system reported an issue on August 8, 2026, at the Greater Changhua 4 offshore wind farm.
Fortunately, at the time of the incident, Orsted said there were no ships or personnel operating near the turbine and the surrounding waters, which prevented injuries and casualties.
After the fire was reported to Taiwan’s Energy Administration, which comes under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, safety steps were taken immediately.
The turbine was first cut off from the transmission system, closed down and isolated from other turbines that continue to work normally.
Secondly, a barrier was put in place to enclose the affected area as a precautionary measure while authorities continue to monitor the situation and ascertain the cause of the fire.
Orsted said that it is working with Siemens Gamesa to assess the condition of the other turbines as well, and determine that everything is working properly.
The companies have come up with a plan to undertake an investigation and also repair the turbine.
The Greater Changhua 4 offshore wind farm, with a 583 MW power generation capacity, lies 35 to 60 km off Changhua County in Taiwan.
It has 42 SG 14-236 wind turbines, which were supplied by German company Siemens Gamesa, with the last ones installed in January this year.
The wind farm is a part of the Greater Changhua 2a and 4 projects, with a total power generation capacity of 920MW. The project is not yet completed and will be commissioned by the end of 2026, according to reports.
