Sweden Donates 10 Coast Guard Boats To Ukraine For Mine Clearance And Maritime Operations

Sweden will donate 10 Coast Guard boats to Ukraine for mine clearance, transport, towing, and rescue operations, the Swedish government said.

The Swedish Coast Guard has been ordered to prepare the boats for transfer.

The vessels will be handed over to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (SES), which will use them for water-borne specialist response operations, including demining riverbeds and channels.

The Swedish Civil Defence and Resilience Agency will transport the boats to Ukraine.

The donation consists of 10 workboats and high-speed boats. They will be handed over in their existing condition after Swedish identification details and equipment used specifically by Swedish government agencies are removed.

“Sweden is supporting Ukraine on a number of fronts and is now providing additional reinforcement to the country’s maritime capabilities. Towing, demining and transportation are all key capabilities that can now be further bolstered,” Minister for Civil Defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin said.

The boats are being provided as free aid and are intended to expand Ukraine’s ability to conduct specialised operations on its waterways.

Sweden continues to provide defence support to Ukraine.

This week, the Swedish government told its armed forces to allocate more than 270 million Swedish kronor, or about $28.4 million, to support Ukraine’s defence. Most of the money will go toward air defence systems.

Of that amount, $14 million will be contributed to the PURL programme. Under the programme, NATO members purchase weapons and ammunition from the United States and then transfer them to Ukraine.

The programme has been active since 2025, after U.S. President Donald Trump refused to provide free weapons to Ukraine. Sweden plans to buy $552 million worth of U.S. weapons for Ukraine through the programme.

Sweden previously announced its 21st military aid package for Ukraine, valued at around $1.4 billion. The country has also said it is ready to strengthen Ukraine’s air force with Gripen fighter jets.

The Swedish Coast Guard is preparing the 10 boats for delivery. The Swedish Civil Defence and Resilience Agency will arrange their transport to Ukraine.
