2026 Women’s Casual Clothes- philosophy? What looks good and why?

I am lost. I admittedly do not know what looks good these days. (Specifically for adult women.) could someone help me with the vision?

I go on Old Navy online, and target, and everything looks... sort of ugly. And I don’t mean that as a rude term. It’s just things that I sort of expect to find at a good will. Plain, not flattering shapes, and patterns that I think I’m trained to think is for older ladies. (I think patterns that were common in late 90‘s churches.) “plain” is a better term.

I think people look great in these clothes, but I just don’t get the vision at stores.

specific things:

- “boring colors” (beige, cream, white, black, gray) being the majority of colors I see.

- bland versions of colors. (no pastels or jewel tones, more earth tones.)

- boxy silhouettes. (boxy shirts, barrel pants)

- collared Shirts that give me math teacher vibes

- ribbed shirts

- white tennis shoes that my dad would use for mowing the lawn.

again, people know how to put it together and look beautiful. But I need a un-training and a retraining.

I heard that today’s fashion is more about the fashion than the body. When you look at wide pants, you’re looking at the pants, not the contour of the butt and legs.

Are there any other philosophies that are important to understand for the aesthetics these days?

edit: this is more in generalities. I‘ve always lacked fashion literacy, but now I feel like I can’t read the fashion at all. If you stood a bunch of youth together, I could not tell you who was the cool girl and who was the out of touch homeschooler.

Nothing wrong with them, just something wrong with me.

Thanks for everyone’s help and input!
