The Coat is the Outfit, According to the Altuzarra Runway

The Coat is the Outfit, According to the Altuzarra Runway

Fall dressing often starts with the layers underneath, but Altuzarra's Spring/summer 2027 collection makes a convincing argument for working in reverse. The coats commanded attention (both on social media and in my editor group chats—hello NYFW!) with sweeping proportions, autumnal fabrics, and a slightly undone elegance that felt equal parts romantic and pragmatic. Rather than simply completing each look, the outerwear dictated its mood—proof that the right coat can do most of the styling work for you.

That idea translates particularly well to fall, when getting dressed becomes an exercise in thoughtful layering. I'm taking cues from Altuzarra and building five outfits from the coat inward, pairing statement-making (yet classic!) outerwear with pieces that complement rather than compete with it. Think checked skirts, patent-leather loafers, and unexpected accessories, like the basket bag. These are the kind of combinations that make bundling up feel like the best part of getting dressed.

The Barn Jacket + A Raffia Bag + Full Skirt

A flash of red gives this otherwise earthly look its momentum. I'd echo Altuzarra's play with color and print by pairing the jacket with a neutral button-down and striped maxi skirt, then finishing with a similarly graphic woven tote. The best basket bags last well past the summer.

The Suede Bomber + Bowling Bag + Modern Pencil Skirt

There's something inherently luxurious about a rich caramel suede jacket, especially when the rest of the outfit is more pared-back in sensibility. A streamlined, but modern, black midi skirt and polished loafers sharpen the texture, while a taupe top-handle bag keeps the palette tonal and sophisticated.

The Tuxedo Blazer + Button-Down + Embellished Slip Skirt

This is classic tailoring made considerably less predicated. A fitted black blazer and crisp poplin shirt create the foundation, but the pale green sequined skirt introduces an unexpected hit of texture and color; don't save the preciousness for special occasions!

The Cropped Trench + Checked Skirt + Loafer

Altuzarra's voluminous black jacket becomes the anchor for a softer, more romantic combination. A full plaid skirt mirrors the runway's dramatic proportions, while sculptural pearl earrings add polish that can work from day to night.

The Leather Funnel Neck + Basket Bag + Poplin Skirt

The outfit appeal here is all in the contrast: an oversized chocolate-brown leather funnel-neck jacket against the airiness of a white poplin midi skirt. The woven handbag and barely-there brown sandals continue that natural textures, creating a fall look that feels substantial up top and unexpectedly light below.
