Offshore Wind Lease Reversal: Administration Offers $4 Billion Reimbursement

The Trump Administration is cancelling clean offshore wind energy projects in support of developing fossil fuels, which has led to widespread criticism and legal battles with California and New York.

The Attorneys General of Connecticut, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont, Delaware, Maine and Massachusetts have also joined the lawsuit.

The U.S. government is offering $1.4 billion each to energy companies for buying back wind leases and terminating the clean energy projects throughout the country, with the total taxpayer funds being spent to reimburse the companies, amounting to $4 billion.

The same companies are then expected to redirect their funds into geothermal energy projects. Doug Burgum, the Interior Secretary, defended the decision of the administration by stating that there is a need to develop reliable and secure energy infrastructure which can boost the economy and lower electricity bills.

The Attorney General of California, Rob Bonta, sued the government for cancelling an offshore project across the East and West Coasts by Invenergy, a company based in Chicago.

Bonta added that California supports the fight against climate change; however, it is now forced into legal battles with the federal government to safeguard and uphold its clean energy policies.

Letitia James, the attorney general of New York, was supported by 7 other states in filing a case against the buyback of the Invenergy lease. It also includes a contract with a company called Bluepoint Wind, which decided to cancel a massive wind project off New Jersey and New York under the government’s orders.

James called the decision illegal and warned that cancellation of clean energy projects would, in the long run, increase utility costs for Americans due to limited power generation sources as the population continues to increase.

She also said that the high electricity bills are the result of the government paying energy corporations rather than creating additional power generation sources.

U.S. President has shown his opposition to wind energy projects, saying he would not let any new offshore wind farms to be constructed on American soil.

Bonta spoke at the UN General Assembly before Trump, emphasising that federal directives to block critical clean energy projects are not in sync with global environmental challenges faced by all and that it is not only time-consuming to undo the progress already made but also detrimental in the long run.

He concluded by saying that California is taking the required steps to fight climate change despite federal pressure against it.
