Dust Bath Dilemma: Keeping Your Chickens Happy (and the Mess at Bay!)

I usually use compost and grit but not sure what I can use to keep them happy and not have a massive mess all over the place. I wanna avoid health problems as much as possible, obviously but I'm a starter chicken owner and don't know where to begin. Any suggestions? Thanks =)
