Ocean Data Enables Swift Rescue of Injured Seafarer Near Andamans

The Indian Coast Guard rescued a 36-year-old Bangladeshi crew member from the bulk carrier MV AMRIS off Diglipur in the North Andaman Islands on the night of September 20-21.

The crew member was injured after he fell on board the vessel. He suffered severe head and spinal injuries, the Coast Guard said.

The rescue was carried out by Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Rajdoot after the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Sri Vijaya Puram received information about the injured crew member.

The Coast Guard said the rescue took place at night in rough seas. Its headquarters in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands coordinated the medical evacuation after receiving the information from MRCC Sri Vijaya Puram.

ICGS Rajdoot reached the vessel and took the injured crew member on board. He was then taken to Diglipur Harbour. An Indian Navy aircraft later flew him to Sri Vijaya Puram for urgent treatment at GB Pant Hospital.

The Coast Guard said the evacuation involved coordination between the Coast Guard and the Indian Navy.

On September 12, the Indian Coast Guard evacuated 21 of the 24 crew members from merchant vessel MV KMAX EMPEROR after it collided with MV TRUE MARINER off OTB Kandla in Gujarat.

Defence PRO Chennai said three crew members remained on board MV KMAX EMPEROR to support vessel operations.

The Defence PRO said the Coast Guard launched the evacuation after the two merchant vessels collided.

The Coast Guard has not provided any further information about the condition of the Bangladeshi crew member after he was taken to the Hospital.
